We got a chance to sit and chat for a while with Source Church’s October Volunteer of the Month, Beth Dobson. If you don’t know Beth, she’s amazing - she’s kind, she’s sweet and she’s a lot of fun, but she’s also an extremely hard worker. Beth has been the Director of Kidz Source since September 2020, taking charge of lesson planning for the kiddos, as well as scheduling all of the behind-the-scenes care for the youngest members of our church during services.
Take a few minutes to sit and read our interview with Beth. You’ll be glad you did. Beth and all of our amazing volunteers do so much and are often the behind-the-scenes support network of our entire church - they’re worth knowing!
Q: Tell us a little about yourself - where are you from, what are your hobbies, etc. All those tiny details you think no one might care about.
Beth: Well, I’m from the countryside of Northern VA - country, country - where fox hunts with hounds are still a thing. I moved to Manteo years ago with my family and am so glad to still be here.
I’m a giant kid, really - I love to do art and anything with my hands, really. I love kids because I’m truly a big kid myself. We love to travel to Universal Studios - “we” being me and my grandchildren, especially.
I love to read. My favorite genre is a good mystery or whodunnit, and I love photography. My dad and I actually had a dark room in the basement of my house growing up!
Q: Wow you are so well-rounded. What’s your favorite kind of art to do?
Beth: Wow, that’s hard. I’d have to say my go-to is pencil drawings.
Q: What is your favorite part about leading Kidz Source and working with the Kidz here?
Beth: Really it’s that I can be silly with the kids - it’s freeing and I love seeing things through their eyes. I really enjoy working with toddlers; crawling around on the floor with them is the best.

I also enjoy the older kids because they “get it” and you can talk about real-world issues. They’re older and you can really communicate with them.
I love getting all the love and hugs and being called “teacher”. It’s a huge responsibility and a blessing to have that responsibility - of sharing His love and how He wants us to be and let it guide us. Showing them how to do that in their lives and sharing with them how to do that is so big and good.
Q: What is the favorite lesson you’ve ever taught?
Beth: When we were doing the walls of Jericho coming down and I gave the kids Kazoos. They had to march and then nap, march and then nap and then they got to blow the kazoos. Then I sent them home with the parents. (laughter)
(you’re welcome!)
Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
Beth: People might not know that I’m very soft-hearted. I am very sensitive - I keep to myself a lot. I’m very much an introvert.
Q: What’s your favorite scripture?
Beth: Definitely Isaiah 43:19 - Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
It is truly a reminder that no matter what season I’m in, He is always making a new way.

Beth, you are so so loved and so appreciated by us. Thank you for loving our kiddos and helping ensure that they are well taken care of and being taught the Word during church.
If you see Beth around, be sure to give her a high five and a big “THANK YOU!”
